The auction for the upcoming season of Indian Premier League (IPL) was held last month in Dubai. While some intense bidding war transpired at the auction hall, the event also secured a place in the record books due to its historic viewership.

According to the Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC), it was one of the most-watched mini-auctions in history and the viewership was 29 percent higher than last year’s IPL auction. Overwhelmed by the remarkable feat, Jay Shah, the Secretary of the BCCI, penned a note on X (formerly Twitter), underlining the ever-growing popularity of the IPL.

“Soaring to new heights this season at the IPL auction with a record-breaking peak of 22.8 million viewers – a remarkable 57% increase from last year! The mini-auction for the 2024 IPL went for nearly six hours.
The 2023 IPL auction became iconic after the Rs 20-crore mark was breached for the first time in the history of the tournament. Australian pacer Mitchell Starc secured the highest bid, joining Kolkata Knight Riders for Rs 24.75 crore. Pat Cummins also hit the headlines after the World Cup-winning captain signed for Sunrisers Hyderabad for a staggering value of Rs 20.5 crore.
