The Tehrik-e Taliban has captured the Chitral district in northern Pakistan, sources told CNN-News18 on Thursday. The TTP claims that about 75 Pakistani soldiers are in their custody and 10 have been killed in the battle.
According to sources, the Pakistani media has been ordered not to broadcast this information.
Confirming the reports, the TTP says it is carrying out organised attacks on the forces in Chitral.
The Pakistan army is using a fake narrative that the TTP is using Afghanistan territory, which is not correct, the group said.
“This is after we got a call from local Chitral people who wanted our support and told us that they stand by us,” the TTP said.
Militant attacks have become more frequent since the Tehrik-e Taliban Pakistan ended its truce with the government in November last year.
On August 22, six soldiers were killed in an exchange of fire in South Waziristan district, the military’s media wing said last week.
Last month, as many as 12 soldiers of the Pakistan Army were killed in separate military operations in the Zhob and Sui areas of Balochistan.
CNN-News18 tried to contact the Pakistan prime minister’s office (PMO) and information ministry about Thursday’s development but received no response.
