Mental Health Day 2023: Understanding Maternal Health Challenges During Pregnancy & Postpartum
Dr. Ayushi Shukla, Consultant – Psychiatry, SRV Hospitals – Dombivli discusses post-partum depression in women

Pregnancy and childbirth are celebrated as joyous milestones in a woman’s life. However, it’s essential to recognize that this transformative journey can also bring about a range of emotional challenges, including depression and other mental health issues due to significant hormonal fluctuations. After childbirth, the abrupt drop in estrogen and progesterone levels can trigger a condition known as postpartum blues or “baby blues,” which affects up to 80% of new mothers. These feelings of sadness, irritability, and anxiety typically resolve within a few weeks.

For some women, the transition into motherhood can be much more challenging. Postpartum depression (PPD) is a more severe and persistent form of maternal mental health disorder, affecting around 10-20% of new mothers. PPD often manifests as overwhelming sadness, loss of interest or pleasure, fatigue, changes in appetite, and difficulty bonding with the baby. It can significantly impact a mother’s ability to care for herself and her child. The demands of caring for a newborn, leading to severe sleep deprivation and the unrealistic society expectations and the pressure to be a “perfect” mother are some of the factors contributing to maternal mental health challenges. Also, women with a history of depression or anxiety may be at a higher risk of experiencing breakdowns.

It’s essential to identify that experiencing depression or other mental health challenges during pregnancy or postpartum is not a sign of weakness or failure as a mother. These challenges are medical conditions that can affect anyone and should not be stigmatized. A strong support system can provide emotional relief and practical assistance when needed and help pregnant women and new mothers on their journey to mental and emotional well-being.
