IIT Madras Records 19% Increase in Internships, 51% Rise in Companies Extending Offers

There was a 17% rise in the number of students who secured internships and a 51% rise in the number of firms that approached IIT Madras to offer internships

The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M) reported a 19 per cent rise in internship offers received during the first day of the campus internship campaign for students from the 2023-24 batch. The internship fair was held in two sessions this year, on August 5 and 12. The release stated that 19 foreign internship offers from seven firms were received on the day of the internship campaign. According to the institute, there was a 17 per cent rise in the number of students who were able to secure internships and a 51 per cent rise in the number of organisations that approached IIT Madras to offer internships.

With offers from firms in the US, UK, Hong Kong, Singapore, and the Netherlands, the internship drive was held in a hybrid style.

“An internship is now an essential component for the launching of a successful and fulfilling career for students. It enables them to imply their skills and knowledge acquired during their curriculum in a real-life work environment. I’m happy with the efforts made by our team to enable students to get internships despite turbulent conditions,” stated Prof. Sathyan Subbiah, advisor (placement and internship), IIT Madras

This year, J.P. Morgan Chase & Co., Adobe, Procter & Gamble, Texas Instruments, and Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories were a few of the major recruiters participating in the internship campaign.

Siddhesh Gatkal, Student Internship Head, IIT Madras, praised the student team’s efforts in organising the internship drive and said that they have worked even harder to make sure that students can pursue their dream jobs in spite of unfavourable global conditions. “The unprecedented rise in the number of recruiters both shows the trust recruiters place on IIT Madras students and the efforts undertaken by the team,” he added.

Meanwhile, earlier this month, the Board of Governors of the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) named G Thilakavathi IPS, a former Director General of Police (DGP) for Tamil Nadu, as a “Student Ombuds,” effective November 7.

The Student Ombuds strive to keep the campus secure for the students’ well-being. With the goal of providing them with assistance, it will collaborate closely with the students. The management at IIT Madras will also collaborate closely with the Student Ombuds to ensure that issues are handled in a timely manner.
