Heavy Rains Alert in Sikkim, Bihar Among These States; Landslides Likely in Bengal Districts | Key Points

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall over West Bengal, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya during the next two days.

The weather department has also issued a red alert in North Bengal and an orange alert in South Bengal. A flood alert is in place for the state’s seven districts including Kalimpong, Darjeeling, Paschim Medinipur, Bankura, Purulia Purba Bardhaman, and Jalpaiguri.

In a statement, it said that the trough is running from Sikkim to south Chhattisgarh across the low-pressure area over western parts of Bengal in lower tropospheric levels.

Here are the weather updates:

  • According to the IMD, the southwest monsoon is withdrawing from Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra.
  • Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely for West Bengal, Arunachal Pradesh, and Sikkim till October 6.
  • The low-pressure area is very likely to move slowly northeastwards during the next two days across West Bengal.
  • The water level in rivers in the hill districts of Darjeeling and Kalimpong in the northern part of West Bengal is also likely to rise. The Bengal region shares a border with Sikkim where a flash flood left 10 people dead, scores injured, and nearly 80 people including 22 Armymen missing.
  • As a result, landslides may occur in Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts, a spokesperson of the met office in Kolkata was quoted as saying by PTI.
  • States like Jharkhand, Bihar, and Manipur may witness heavy showers till October 5.
  • Extremely heavy rainfall is very likely over Assam and Meghalaya till October 6.
  • Light and moderate precipitation is likely over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura till October 7.
  • Andaman and Nicobar Islands can observe an extended period of rainfall till October 8 as predicted by the IMD.
  • “The conditions are favorable for the withdrawal of the south-west monsoons. The rains will reduce from tomorrow in Kerala”, said K Santhosh, director of the Regional Meteorological Centre, Trivandrum told news agency PTI.
  • A dry weather is likely over Northwest and West India for the next five days.
