Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) workers on Wednesday staged a protest outside its party headquarters in the national capital over the hooch tragedy in Gujarat where 40 people lost their lives.

Raising slogans against the incident, AAP workers are heading towards the BJP headquarters on Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg here. During the protest, some AAP workers along with MLA Rituraj Jha climbed atop bus of Delhi Police. Several  have been detained and taken away by Delhi Police.

The death toll due to the consumption of spurious liquor made from highly poisonous methyl alcohol in Gujarat has reached 40, while 10 people have been arrested in connection with the matter so far.

Earlier in the day, Congress MP Shaktisinh Gohil and AAP MP Sanjay Singh gave suspension of business notice in Rajya Sabha over the deaths due to spurious liquor in Gujarat.

AAP national convenor and Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday met people and their families who fell ill after drinking spurious liquor, in Gujarat’s Bhavnagar.

Primary investigations have revealed some small-time bootleggers of different villages of Botad district had made spurious liquor or hooch by mixing water with methyl alcohol or methanol and sold it to villagers for Rs 20 per pouch, police said.

Out of the deceased, 31 belonged to different villages in Botad and nine were natives of neighbouring Dhandhuka taluka in Ahmedabad district, the official of Botad police control room said.

Nearly 50 people are still admitted to hospitals in Bhavnagar, Botad and Ahmedabad, he said.

The Botad and Ahmedabad police on Tuesday registered three First Information Reports (FIRs) against nearly 20 culprits under Indian Penal Code Sections 302 (murder), 328 (causing hurt by poison) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) and have arrested at least 10 of them so far.

The Vadodara rural police on Wednesday nabbed Jatubha Rathod, one of the accused in an FIR registered by Barvala police in Botad and absconding since being booked, an official said.

The liquor tragedy came to light on early Monday morning when some people living in Rojid village in Botad and other surrounding villages were referred to government hospitals in Barvala area and Botad towns after their health condition started deteriorating. Three FIRs have been registered against 14 main culprits under sections 302 (murder), 328 (causing hurt by poison) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC, said Bhatia, adding six persons have been arrested by police so far.

“Forensic analysis has established that the victims had consumed methyl alcohol. We have booked 14 persons on the charges of murder and other offnences and already detained majority of the accused for further investigation,” Bhatia told reporters in Gandhinagar. Meanwhile, the Gujarat Home Department has formed a three-member committee, headed by senior IPS officer Subhash Trivedi, to conduct a detailed inquiry into the incident and submit a report within three days, said a state government release.
