While Manoj Kumar’s debut film was Fashion, Dharmendra’s career began in 1960 with Arjun Hingorani’s Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere. Fashion was released in 1957. Since there was just a three-year gap in time between their respective Bollywood debuts, they are frequently regarded as contemporary. Dharmendra once exited from a film offered to him by Mohan Sehgal, following which it went to Manoj Kumar and became a huge success. Let us tell you about the film. The movie was the 1969-released Sajan. The first half of the film’s plot was inspired by the 1951-British movie, Happy Go Lucky. Manoj Kumar and Asha Parekh appeared as the lead pair in the movie. Director Mohan Sehgal had, however, approached Dharmendra for the lead role in the movie. According to an IMDb report, Dharmendra was initially supposed to play the role of Manoj Kumar’s Ashok Saxena. The director’s assistant made Dharmendra feel that Mohan Sehgal was doing him a favour by signing him. This made Dharmendra uncomfortable and he did not want to do the film anymore. He distanced himself from the film and Sajan landed with Manoj Kumar instead.
Sajan was the fourth and last film where Manoj Kumar and Asha Parekh were paired opposite each other. Before this film, both of them were seen in the superhit films Do Badan, Upkaar and Apna Banake Dekho. All these films are included in the list of highest grossing films of Bollywood. Sajan was a mystery romantic film and was much appreciated by the audience. According to media reports, Mohan Sehgal made Sajan for a mere Rs 38 lakh. In contrast, the movie brought in a respectable Rs 1 crore 30 lakh at the box office, ranking as the 10th highest grossing film of 1969. It contains evergreen popular songs like Ae Mere Meharban and Reshan Ki Dori sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Mohammad Rafi.
Shatrughan Sinha made his Bollywood debut with Sajan, although his role was quite trivial.
