Filmmaker Rakesh Roshan, in the year 2000, launched his son Hrithik Roshan in the film Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai. The film became nothing less than a national phenomenon. Hrithik became the heartthrob of the nation and a star with just one film to his credit. His father made three more films with him – Koi Mil Gaya, Krrish and Krrish 3 and all were smash hits. The success of these films not only proved Hrithik’s prowess as an actor, but also Rakesh Roshan’s mettle as an ace director. Very few people know that Rakesh Roshan had to mortgage his house and car to make Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai.
Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai’s budget overshot by Rs 3 crore, a big amount in that era. Since Rakesh Roshan was hell-bent on producing the film, he took a huge risk. Hrithik talked about it to Karan Thapar in a 2001 interview and said that his father mortgaged both their house and their car to finance the film. He also added that the last time such a situation had taken place was when Rakesh Roshan was making his first directorial Khudgarz, which he also produced. The risk paid off both times, Hrithik said.
Rakesh Roshan had been an actor before he became a full time filmmaker. His career as an actor was insignificant and is largely overshadowed by his successful stint as a director. He got very few solo hero films in his career. He got solo hero roles in more women-oriented films where the focus was more on the actress, such as Paraya Dhan with Hema Malini, Aankh Micholi with Bharati, Khubsoorat with Rekha and Kaamchor with Jaya Prada.
He made his directorial debut with Khudgarz and followed it up with another successful film Khoon Bhari Maang and then Kishen Kanhaiyya. Some unsuccessful films followed but then he got a huge blockbuster in the form of Karan Arjun that starred both Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan. Another hit followed with Koyla, in which he was assisted by Hrithik. Every film he has made since then has been a success.
