Bhavatharini, the National award-winning singer and daughter of veteran composer Ilaiyaraaja, passed away recently after battling an illness. She was in her late 40s and was undergoing treatment in Sri Lanka at the time of her demise. The news of her death left many, including director-actor Venkat Prabhu, in shock. Venkat, who is Ilaiyaraaja’s nephew, shared a note on social media.
Taking to Instagram, Venkat Prabhu shared a poignant image of himself with Bhavatharini, captioning it, “Bavatha our last pic together.” Another photo showed him alongside Bhavatharini and friends, including Yuvan Shankar Raja. The director expressed his sorrow and shared memories of the departed singer, highlighting their close bond. Reportedly, Venkat Prabhu broke down inconsolably during Bhavatharini’s funeral and, along with his cousins and friends, sang her National Award-winning song Mayil Pola Ponnu Onnu from the movie Bharathi during the last rituals.

Bhavatharini, who lent her vocals to songs in Venkat Prabhu’s films like Goa and Maanaadu, was diagnosed with fourth-stage liver cancer. Seeking treatment in Sri Lanka, she fought bravely but, unfortunately, succumbed to the illness on January 25.
Venkat Prabhu, currently occupied with the shooting of his upcoming film Greatest of All Time starring Vijay, has taken a break to cope with the loss. The Thailand schedule of the Thalapathy Vijay starrer has been completed, with the film featuring Vijay in dual roles. The star-studded cast includes Meenakshi Chaudhry, Laila, Sneha, Prashanth, Prabhudheva, and Mohan. Yuvan Shankar Raja is composing the music for the movie. Greatest of All Time marks the first collaboration between Venkat Prabhu and Vijay and it is anticipated to hit the screens in the second half of the year.
The loss of Bhavatharini has left a void in the music industry and her contributions will be remembered by fans and colleagues alike.
