Filmmaker David Dhawan has revealed that he was intentionally strict with his son, Varun Dhawan, during their first film collaboration. Varun, who had been launched by Karan Johar and had previously assisted him on the film My Name is Khan, was used to a certain way of working. He made his acting debut with Student of the Year.
During an interview with Arbaaz Khan on The Invincibles Series, David shared how Varun had quietly approached Karan for work while he and his wife, Lalli Dhawan, considered if Varun might be better as a banker. Recalling Karan Johar wanting to launch Varun, David Dhawan said, “He came back from abroad after studying, and I asked, ‘What do you want to do in life?’ Lalli said, ‘Everyone is taking up a bank job these days’. We never talked about films. All of a sudden, he went to Karan Johar and said, ‘I want to assist you’. Obviously, Karan knew the family very well, and they went abroad to work on My Name is Khan. The cameraman, Ravi Chandran, was the one who told Karan to keep an eye on him.”
David remembered Varun feeling insecure during the shoot, likely because of Sidharth. He said, “Karan came over to our house and said that he wants to launch him, and they did a photoshoot with Sidharth Malhotra.” David would often be on sets. He recalled, “I was with him, and some days he used to be very upset also. I told him, ‘These things happen in two-hero films. Listen, my son, you’re damn good. Your confidence is something else. Don’t be afraid, take the leap’.”
Meanwhile, Varun Dhawan is all set to make his OTT debut with Citadel Honey Bunny co-starring Samantha Ruth Prabhu. The series has grabbed headlines ever since its announcement, keeping fans on their toes.
