While this aspect of the trade is often misinterpreted, it is undoubtedly as decisive as one’s understanding of film’s production and post-production process for monetary success. With international film festivals emerging as the most precious platform to market and publicise films, directors are finding it a bit easy to get distributors and sale agents to get their projects discovered.
Interestingly, most of the renowned international film festivals that promise to entertain, inspire and engage viewers, are welcoming Indian directors and stars to screen their films and help them push distribution.
We give you a quick lowdown on films (with a strong Indian connect) that are earning huge cult following internationally and helping directors network with producers and other prominent professionals in the industry.
Doob - No Bed Of Roses: After appearing in Hindi Medium, Irrfan Khan's latest Bollywood film which managed to impress both critics and viewers alike, his international film Doob - No Bed Of Roses has garnered huge popularity abroad. Directed by Mostafa Farooki, the film was premiered at the Shanghai Film Festival and also screened at the 39th Moscow International Film Festival where it was honoured with prominent Kommersant award.
Victoria and Abdul: With the announcement of Ali Fazal’s film as the lead opposite Dame Judi Dench in the period drama Victoria and Abdul, his fans have been excited to watch what the most-anticipated films of this year has to offer. Ahead of its release, the film - which has been directed by Academy Award Nominee Stephen Frears - will soon have a world premiere at the annual Venice International Film Festival. Founded in 1932, the festival is amongst the top 3 most reputed festivals in the world along with Cannes and Berlin. The film from India has also made it to Toronto International Film Festival.
The Hungry: Another film that exemplifies how Indian viewers have begun to accept home-grown cinema that is made in consonance with international standards is The Hungry. Directed by Bornila Chatterjee, the film is a family drama which is set in India. With Sayani Gupta, Naseeruddin Shah and Tisca Chopra in key roles, the film deals with the issue of hunger of power, love and money. An adaptation of William Shakespeare's tragedy, Titus Andronicus, the film will be screened at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).
Omerta: National Award winning filmmaker Mehta’s Omerta that features National Award-winning actor Rajkummar Rao will also have its world premiere at TIFF in the Special Presentations Opening Film category. Based on a true story, Omerta has a universal connect. The film is Rao and Mehta’s fourth collaboration after Aligarh, Citylights and Shahid, which helped Rao bag National Award for the best actor.

Mukkabaaz (The Brawler): Anurag Kashyap is all prepared to return as director with his new project Mukkabaaz, which is slated for November 10 release. Co-produced by Anand L Rai, the film - which features Vineeth Kumar as the protagonist and Jimmy Shergill as the antagonist - is about sports politics. Those who have watched the teaser know that the dialogue, "Uttar Pradesh ke Mike Tyson, jinhe pehla mukka chalane se pehle ek Brahman ki kanya se muhabbat ho gayi" is enough to understand why this is a story we’d all love to watch. The film will appear at the 42nd edition of the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival where works from the US, Britain, France, Germany and Spain will also be screened from September 7-17. As part of the Special Presentations 2017, Mukkabaaz (The Brawler) will have its world premiere too.

The Song Of Scorpions: Irrfan Khan’s Hollywood venture is also set for its international premiere. Directed by Anup Singh (who also directed Qissa), its premiere will be held at the prestigious Locarno International Film Festival. A love story, the film has Irrfan essaying the character of a camel trader and his co-star Golshifteh Farahani plays his wife and is endowed with the ability to cure any irredeemable pain through music.
