Shekhar Suman has opened up about performing a racy scene for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s recently released series, Heeramandi. In the scene, Suman, who played the role of a nawab, was sitting in a carriage with Manisha Koirala’s Mallikajaan. However, he was too drunk to even notice that he was standing with his back turned to Mallikajaan and rather, was getting fellatio mid-air.
Talking about the scene, Shekhar Suman told Zoom Entertainment that it was never a part of the script originally but when Bhansali talked about it on sets, everyone was left shocked. “I went with all my preparation, having learned my lines. Just before the scene was supposed to begin, he called me over and said, ‘I have thought of a bizarre interpretation of this, are you open to it?’ And he completely turned it around. It was something that nobody had thought of, the ADs were like this (Shekhar mimicked a stunned expression),” Suman said.
The 61-year-old actor admitted that even though the scene felt “strange” initially, he agreed to do it. “Bhansali wanted the nawab to turn around, and get fellatio mid-air, thinking that Mallikajaan is sitting on that side. And he’s convinced. It was a strange interpretation, and it hasn’t been done by anybody before, somebody having sex mid-air. He said, ‘I’m fine if you say no, if you find it too bizarre’,” he added.
Shekhar Suman shared that he performed the scene in one take which left everyone on sets impressed. He revealed that after the scene was over, Bhansali rushed to him and called it ‘magnificent’.
“I said, ‘In this life, nothing is too bizarre, I’ll do it’. And it was done, first take. Now, a drunken scene is difficult to perform, because you are either over or under. You can start hamming majestically. But somehow, I understood the tonality of it, the gravitas of it. The scene also brings out the pathos of this nawab, a rich man who is behaving in such an (undignified way). So, I did it instinctively, and he came running and said, ‘Magnificent’. And it was pack-up after that,” Shekhar said.
Later, all the technicians also came to Shekhar Suman and said, ‘Sir, thank you, otherwise this would’ve gone on and on’. He’s a stickler. If an actor hadn’t caught the ‘sur’, it would’ve been another seven hours.’
Currently streaming on Netflix, Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar also stars Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Richa Chadha, Sanjeeda Shaikh, Aditi Rao Hydari, Sharmin Segal Mehta, Farida Jalal, Fardeen Khan and Adhyayan Suman in key roles. It explores the various aspects of a woman’s trials and tribulations.
