Scarlett Johansson said OpenAI made a voice for the ChatGPT system that sounded a lot like her after she said no to doing it herself. She said this after OpenAI decided to remove the voice called ‘Sky.’ OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, said the voice wasn’t meant to be Scarlett Johansson’s.
Johansson said in her statement that Altman had asked her last September to voice a ChatGPT character, but she turned down the offer. “Nine months later, my friends, family and the general public all noted how much the newest system named ‘Sky’ sounded like me,” she said, adding, “When I heard the released demo, I was shocked, angered and in disbelief that Mr. Altman would pursue a voice that sounded so eerily similar to mine that my closest friends and news outlets could not tell the difference.”
Closer home, Bollywood, too, has been plagued by AI and deepfakes. After Rashmika Mandanna, Alia Bhatt and Nora Fatehi’s deepfake videos went viral, there was widespread outcry about the misuse of technology and the absence of adequate legal safeguards that have allowed this harmful use of artificial intelligence (AI) to flourish.
Not long back, a video with a morphed voice of Katrina Kaif speaking French had also gone viral on social media. The original video dates back to 2017 when Katrina Kaif and Salman Khan were present at the launch event of Bina Kak’s book, Silent Sentinels of Ranthambhore, in Mumbai. They were joined by Salman’s father, veteran screenwriter Salim Khan. A fan page of Katrina shared the video, morphed this time, where she is speaking fluent French, assisted by artificial intelligence.
Aamir Khan, in a purported 27-second clip, which seemed to have been edited using artificial intelligence (AI), could be seen talking about staying away from rhetoric (jumla) before the Lok Sabha elections. The deepfake video inserted Aamir into a scene from a decade-old episode of his television show, ’Satyamev Jayate’.
Coming to Ranveer Singh, in a video featuring the actor’s AI-generated voice, he was seen purportedly voicing his political views. While the video from the actor’s recent visit to Varanasi is genuine, the audio is of an AI-enabled voice clone of the actor. In the clip, Singh was seen urging people to vote for “Nayay (justice)” in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. However, it was later clarified that the viral video was morphed and edited. Ranveer also addressed the issue and warned everyone on social media by posting on X, “Deepfake se bacho dostonnnn.”
Bollywood stars have every now and then advocated for stronger actions against such cyber crimes.
