Radhika Apte: If 'Badlapur' makes the viewer uncomfortable, that is exactly the point of the film
In a chat with IBNlive.com, 'Badlapur' actress explained that how the film is not misogynist in character.

New Delhi: While Sriram Raghavan's new film 'Badlapur' has been earning rave reviews, many have called the film unnecessarily violent and misogynist in nature. Radhika Apte who has impressed one and all with her performance as Koko in the film, though begs to differ and says 'if the film makes you feel uncomfortable, that is exactly the point of the story".

In a chat with IBNlive.com, the actress who made an impact with 'Shor In The City' and now 'Badlapur' explained that how the film is not misogynist in character. "Varun Dhawan's character turns a monster because of the incidents that take place with him. Of course it warped and is bound to make you feel uncomfortable."

Radhika reveals that director Sriram Raghavan had given her the option to choose any of the female characters to play in 'Badlapur'. "I chose Koko's character because I felt she was the most complicated of all. I found her character the toughest and funnily enough Sriram Raghavan had in fact wanted me to play the role from the beginning."

Radhika's next film is Anurag Kashyap produced 'Hunterrr'- a sex comedy which features Gulshan Deviah in the lead along with her and two new actresses. Does she feel that Indian audience is mature enough to handle sex comedies and adult humour, the actress says, "Of course not. 'Hunterrr' though is not a sex comedy but I feel our society at large is quite regressive. It lacks the sensibility to understand adult humour, the sort that was depicted during the recent AIB knockout. Everybody has a problem or an issue to raise in India."

The actress, who made has dabbled in theater and done Bengali, Tamil, Telugu films very early in her career states that it was never a planned move and that she stumbled upon all these films. "I was doing a Hindi play and Rahul Bose happened to spot me there and gave me 'Antaheen' my first Bengali film. The film's success led to more offers in the Bengali film industry. Similarly I shot for Ram Gopal Varma's 'Raktcharitra' in Hindi and Telugu which gave me more Telugu films," explained the actress.

While she had tasted commercial and critical success for films like 'Lai Bhari', 'Shor In The City' and now 'Badlapur', the actress is keen on doing content driven films. "I don't like to categorize films according commercial and art cinema but yes, I am more interested in content driven films. I am not too willing to do regular song-dance kind of films."

Considering she has been part of the both small and big budget films, does she feel that the industry, in spite of the new kind films, is still star driven? Radhika ponders for a bit and says, "You know earlier I would rant about the way the industry works but the fact is it is a complicated matter. It is a weird math. So I don't blame anyone." But the actress is quick to add, "Stars do need to come out of their comfort zone, though. I hope 'Badlapur' manages to break a few stereotypes. I mean look at Varun's performance. To do something like this when he is commercial star needs guts. Most actors are stuck in a particular image and do same kind of films. That's not right. We are after all actors and we should be open to all kinds of roles, films," says the actress.

Radhika is now gearing up for an international project in which she will work with Anurag Kashyap on a short film. "It is a project which has a lot of directors making short films on the theme forbidden love. I am working Anurag. That's all I can say as of now about the project. But I am excited about it." The actress will also be seen in 'Hunterrr' which will be releasing in theaters on 20th March.
