Punjab-Based NGO Challenges HC Order On 'Udta Punjab' Release
The NGO, Human Rights Awareness Association, has sought a stay on the film citing that it projects the state of Punjab in bad light.

Just two days before the official release of the controversial movie 'Udta Punjab', a Punjab-based NGO has moved the Supreme Court challenging Bombay High Court's order.

The NGO, Human Rights Awareness Association, has sought a stay on the film citing that it projects the state of Punjab in bad light.

The NGO told a Supreme Court vacation bench of Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel and Justice L.Nageshwara Rao that the Bombay High Court, could not have interfered with the decision of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

On Monday, the Bombay High Court cleared the release of the movie with just one cut after the filmmakers moved the court against Central Board of Film Certification's (CBFC) 89 cuts. The court also raised questions on the board's powers to censor films as the word 'censor' did not appear in the Cinematograph Act.

Earlier, the CBFC had directed more than a dozen cuts in the film - down from the previous 89 - coupled with other directions before its release.

As soon as the news of NGO Human Rights Awareness Association challenging High Court's order on the film spread, social media users took to Twitter to express their anger.
