Parvathy Has an Apt Response for Mammootty Fans Who Called Her 'Cheap Feminist' for Criticising Kasaba

She has always been known for speaking her mind even if it means calling out misogyny in the films of one of the most powerful superheroes of the industry she works with. Malayalam actor Parvathy boldly expressed her views against derogatory dialogues in a film by Mammootty and was trolled by the actor's fans.

Speaking at an open forum hosted at the International Film Festival of Kerala, Parvathy, who recently made her Bollywood debut opposite Irrfan Khan in Qarib Qarib Singlle, said Indian cinema has, at various times, failed the women by idolizing heroes spitting misogynistic dialogues.

Citing the example of Malayalam superstar Mammootty and his recent outing Kasaba, Parvathy said, “I was disappointed to watch a great actor mouth dialogues to a woman that were not just derogatory, but also saddening.”

"In my opinion, there is a word, de-genderisation in films. Unfairness is everywhere. We can't point out one person or group. To change all these is an education which should begin from grassroot level,” she was quoted as saying by Times of India.

Soon after her comments, Mammootty’s fans trolled the actress on social media and called her a “cheap feminist”.

Responding to the criticism, Parvathy, in a series of tweets, said she never meant to say that actors should not do “bad negative” roles but “let's not glorify the negativity”.

“Cinema can reflect all aspects of the society and all kinds of people. The good, the bad and the ugly. But no! It cannot glorify injustice and violence as "cool" & "mass" entertainment. I rest my case. This was a good day indeed! Thank you for sharing (and hurling) your thoughts,” she wrote.

She further clarified that she never criticised Mammootty but was simply expressing her disappointment in the Nithin Renji Panicker-directed movie.
