Who doesn’t love a nice mystery thriller with twists and turns at every juncture of the narrative? It is a genre where you get pulled into the narrative and are glued to your seat for the entire duration of the film. South cinema is known to produce some fine mystery potboilers for many years. Many South Indian thriller movies have been remade into Hindi in recent years such as Drishyam and Cuttputli. After a small decline, this genre has re-emerged, with exceptional films from the South. We are listing a few of them which you can catch on OTT.
Agent Sai Srinivasa Atreya
This was Naveen Polishetty’s debut as a lead actor, as well as Shruti Sharma’s first foray into Telugu cinema. Directed by Swaroop RSJ, this movie is about a rookie detective and his misadventures, making for a nice comedy mystery thriller. Naveen Polishetty also co-wrote the film, which is streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
Neru
Neru, starring Mohanlal and directed by Jeethu Joseph, is a courtroom mystery drama that has Mohanlal take on the mantle of a lawyer fighting for the justice of a visually impaired girl. There are many twists and turns as the truth is gradually uncovered and the film is streaming on Disney+Hotstar.
Ratsasan
As mentioned earlier, this movie was remade in HIndi as Cuttputli with Akshay Kumar. The original starred Vishnu Vishal and Amala Paul and was directed by Ram Kumar. This dark and gritty film revolves around the hunt for a serial killer, who targets young girls. You can catch this film on Sun NXT OTT.
Anjaam Pathira
Anjaam Pathira, a major hit in the Malayalam film industry in 2020, continued the momentum set by Ratsasan. Kunchacko Boban plays a psychologist in this intense thriller. The film was widely praised and commercially successful, resulting in plans for a sequel. Its director, Midhun Manuel Thomas, is also the writer of the current box office success Turbo, now in theatres. This is on Sun NXT too.
Kavaludaari
Kavaludaari is a neo-noir investigational thriller from Kannada industry directed by Hemanth Rao. This movie stands out as it puts aside the commercial aspects typical of South Indian cinema for a more reality rooted drama. It is streaming on Amazon Prime.
