The Kannada film industry has made a big sweep at the 70th National Film Awards. The National Award Winners for films released in 2022 were announced on Friday, August 16. Kantara and KGF 2 emerged as the biggest winners. Kantara won Best Picture and Rishab Shetty bagged the Best Actor award. Yash starrer movie KGF Chapter 2 won Best Kannada Film.
It is a momentous day for Rishab Shetty as Kantara has bagged two awards in the Feature Film category – Best Popular Film and Best Actor. Meanwhile, Yash starrer KGF Chapter 2 has also won two awards. While director Prashanth Neel and Hombale Films LLP have won the award for Best Film, Anbariv has bagged the Best Action Direction Award.
After winning four of the most prestigious awards, the Kannada industry has reaffirmed its footing in the landscape of Indian cinema. Released in September 2022, Kantara starred Rishab Shetty in the lead. It took the global cinematic landscape by storm, captivating audiences with its folklore-based storytelling that explored the intricate connection between humanity and nature.
The film is narrated around a human and nature conflict where Shiva is the rebel who works against nature. The film is set and shot in Keradi in coastal Karnataka which involves the cultures of Kambla and Bhootha Kola. Rishab Shetty not only played the lead in the movie but also wrote and directed it.
On the other hand, the second part of KGF was released in April 2022. Within a few days of its release, the sequel surpassed the expectations of KGF: Chapter 1. Apart from Yash, it also stars Sanjay Dutt as the antagonist, Srinidhi Shetty as Yash’s love interest and Raveena Tandon and Prakash Raj in key roles.
In the second part, Rocky (Yash) who has won over the people of KGF now dreams big and treads a more dangerous path. While he has created an indestructible empire, there are many enemies, especially Adheera (Sanjay Dutt) who are out to finish him and take back KGF. The film was produced by Vijay Kiragandur under the banner of Hombale Films.
After winning big at the National Film Awards, the anticipation around the next instalments of Kantara and KGF has only skyrocketed. Rishab Shetty is currently working on Kantara 2. In 2023, Shetty announced that what the audiences saw was actually part 2 and therefore what will be released next will be Kantara’s prequel, titled ‘Kantara Chapter 1’. As for KGF Chapter 3, while the makers have confirmed the project, they added that the shoot will not begin anytime soon.
