Director Milan Luthria, who is related to Mahesh Bhatt through his mother, talked about how he started in the film industry with Bhatt’s help. He also remembered how Mahesh Bhatt used to direct movies from afar, way before the pandemic made it necessary. Bhatt would give instructions over the phone, telling his assistants how to shoot scenes and get things done.
During an interview with Showsha, Milan Luthria remembered experiencing this way of making films on his very first day working with Bhatt.
He revealed that Mahesh Bhatt is his mother’s cousin. He started working with him and realised he is a very angry man. “He used to be a very angry man, I was very scared of him. He used to yell at people. I went to meet him at RK Studio in Chembur, and the first thing he said to me was, ‘Why did your mother call me? Why couldn’t you call me yourself?’ I said sorry. He asked me how I’d come, and I told him that I came in our car. He forbid me from travelling in cars. He told me that henceforth, I will only travel in buses or trains,” Milan recalled.
Milan then remembered his first day on set. They got a call from Bhatt, who wanted to speak with an assistant. Milan raised his hand and took the call. Bhatt told him how to frame a shot with Sridevi and Anupam Kher. Milan was nervous about giving orders to Bhatt’s team but did it anyway. When Bhatt arrived on set, Milan greeted him and opened the door of his car. Bhatt asked, “Will you do this every day?” Milan said that he would.
Some say Bhatt’s way of directing from afar caused problems with Aamir Khan during their work on the 1998 film, Ghulam. Bhatt explained in an old interview that it wasn’t really nice for him. He had said, “He worked with me on Ghulam. That wasn’t a pleasant experience for me. When a man is burdened by his greatness, that burden is shared by people around him. Economically, that is very difficult, especially if you’re making movies with reasonable budgets.”
