The Malayalam film Padakkalam introduces a new chapter in biometric systems, which have so far been associated only with offices and institutional buildings. The movie, produced by Vijay Babu’s Friday Film House, commenced filming on September 10, Tuesday, with the main backdrop being Amal Jyothi Engineering College in Kanjirappally. A biometric attendance system has been implemented on the film sets, which applies to everyone from actors to technicians. Everyone associated with the production of Padakkalam has to register their attendance through biometrics on the sets. Controller Shibu G Suseelan is the brain behind this innovation, a first of its kind in the Malayalam film industry.
Shibu Suseelan shared videos from the set of the film on Tuesday, showcasing crew members marking their attendance through biometrics.
This is entirely a campus-based film. According to producer Vijay Babu, 90 per cent of the scenes will be shot within the college campus over a 70-day schedule split into two phases.
Padakkalam is expected to challenge the typical stereotypes associated with campus films. Vijay Babu describes it as a fun and fantasy genre film, set in a unique campus environment. The students depicted in the film are a new generation with advanced thinking, influenced by the age of science, comics, and superheroes, which is reflected in their perspectives and ideas. These intelligent and skilled students face certain challenges, and their efforts to overcome these obstacles are portrayed with a rich sense of humour, making the film distinct from other campus movies.
With a vast canvas and a significant budget, Padakkalam features around 4,000 students. The central campus characters are played by Sandeep Pradeep of Phalimi fame, Arun Ajikumarof Little Hearts fame, YouTuber Arun Pradeep, and Niranjana Anoop. The film also stars Suraj Venjaramoodu and Sharafudheen in key roles, along with Pooja Mohanraj and several new faces.
