Malayalam actor-producer Baburaj has been accused of sexual assault by a junior artiste, stirring controversy in the film industry. The woman alleges that the incident occurred at Baburaj’s home in Aluva, where she had been invited under the pretext of discussing a movie role. According to her, upon arriving at the residence, she found only Baburaj and his assistant present, contrary to his claim that a director, scriptwriter, and production controller would also be there.
In her statement, the actress recounts the harrowing experience, claiming that Baburaj later entered the room where she was resting, used abusive language, and sexually assaulted her. “When I reached his home only Baburaj and his assistant was there. He gave me a room to take rest, however, after a while, he knocked at the door. When I opened the door, he got into the room and closed the door, used some abusive words and attacked me and sexually abused me. I didn’t complain to anybody then because he’s a famous actor and I didn’t have support from anyone,” the woman told us.
She further alleged that such misconduct is not uncommon in the film industry, where women are often asked if they are willing to make “adjustments” to secure roles.
The actress did not immediately file a formal complaint due to Baburaj’s prominence and her fear of retaliation in an industry that, she feels, does not support survivors of such incidents. However, she did approach the then Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) in Kochi, who advised her to file a formal complaint. Despite this, she chose not to pursue legal action at the time.
In response to these allegations, Baburaj has strongly denied any wrongdoing and asserted that he will take legal action against the complainant. He has questioned the credibility of the accusations, suggesting that the actress might have been employed at his resort and that these allegations are a ploy to defame him. Baburaj speculated that the timing of the allegations might be linked to his candidacy for the position of general secretary in the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (A.M.M.A), hinting at a possible conspiracy by his rivals within the industry.
