Boman Irani, who has worked in films like Khosla Ka Ghosla, Munna Bhai MBBS, Lage Rahe Munnabhai and PK, among others, is all set to play a character inspired from the real-life Nobel Laureate Kailash Satyarthi in upcoming film Jhalki.
In an interaction with News18.com, Irani shared that it’s imperative for people to know Satyarthi’s story. “It’s important that people know what Mr. Sathyarthi is all about. It’s our responsibility to project him to the country as one of our heroes, apart from being a Nobel Prize winner. With or without a Nobel Prize, I think the man has done some great courageous service and it’s important for people to know about it,” he says.
The actor, who is known for his nuanced portrayals, admits that it’s an added responsibility to get the essence right when a character is inspired from a real-life personality. “It doesn’t have to be a complete mimicry of the person but to get the essence of this person is very important- how the man thinks and how the man approaches his life and all that is more important than saying I’ve got his voice right, body language right- all that is secondary. Any character you play you’ve got to be responsible. You’re responsible because you’ve to present the person the way he is,” said Irani.
Satyarthi is known for his global crusade against child slavery and child labour. He shared the Nobel Peace Prize with Malala Yousafzai of Pakistan in 2014 and while Brahmanand Singh’s directorial isn’t a biopic, Jhalki brings to the fore all the significant work done by Satyarthi.
Irani, who is often credited for adding personal touches to a character, shares that all his roles are borrowed from many real-life people. “There’s a character and you got to develop characters through observations, research, life experiences, people you’ve met in the course of your experiences and people you may not have met. You do a little bit of observational work which is the fun part for me as an actor and I borrow from a lot of real-life people,” he said, adding, “I may not pick up on one particular person, I might borrow from 10 different people and take some trait. But at the same time, I try to make one singular character with this variety of traits. It’s very important that he becomes so specific that it becomes unique. While being unique, the idea is to still be identifiable. He should still be there in the minds of the people.”
