How social media becomes a referee in accidents involving celebrities
Twitter activism gets prominent and the voices gets shriller in any issue involving a celebrity.

London: Actor turned politician Hema Malini is now discharged and back in Mumbai after suffering an accident, allegedly due to over speeding by the driver of her Mercedes Benz. The accident disfigured Hema Malini’s face and killed a 4-year-old girl Sonam who was in the Maruti Alto that was rammed by the swanky car near Dausa.

Clearly, Hema Malini was unlike Karnataka Minister UT Khader, who is known for turning his swanky vehicle into a mini-ambulance, in order to help accident victims. One could argue that Hema Malini, who was herself injured on the road, could not have possibly helped the victims in the other car which was severely damaged.

Within no time, the news was splashed across media and led to endless outcry and accusations on repercussions of VIP culture. The BJP MP from Mathura was the presented as the new Salman Khan for being on the wrong side of law. Armchair activists took to Twitter and other social media platform highlighting responsibilities of the politicians.

As soon as the accident took place, the focus of debate was how Hema was wrong and did not bother to help. Ironically, people gathered near the accident spot got too busy clicking pictures of a bleeding Hema, which eventually made rounds on Whatsapp and facebook. Eyewitnesses confirm that the crowd as well as members of the local media, reached their in no time, but, were more interested in Hema Malini’s well-being. In fact, no one from the crowd tried to check the family members and also the little girl who was severely hit in the accident.

The Twitter took no time to brand Hema Malini as insensitive, aloof and indifferent to quickly get hospitalised in Fortis while the other victims who severely injured were sent to government hospital. Incidentally, no one blamed the crowd for not offer timely help to the family. Like always, we lived up to our reputation of being indifferent to road accident victims. People stopped ‘to watch tamasha’, helping the injured was the last thing on their mind. The onlookers were as much to be blamed as Hema Malini, after all?

Twitter activism gets prominent and the voices gets shriller in any issue involving a celebrity. Salman Khan’s recent hit and run court verdict brought the twitter down as the entire nation jointly gave minute by minute verdict on the case. In fact, Salman’s legal drama had divided the country into two –one group consisted of his dedicated fans which blindly supported Salman while others naturally were celebrity bashers who came with a counter argument on celebrity worshipping. Salman’s case invited same amount of attention and curiosity as was seen in the case of South African sprint runner Oscar Pistorius, who was convicted of shooting his girlfriend Reeva Steenkam in 2013.

Meanwhile, after recapturing from the accident Hema Malini has offered to provide financial help to the family who was injured in the accident. Daughter Esha Deol admitted that her mother was not in a position to comprehend anything.
