After releasing the first posters of their upcoming film Gully Boy, actors Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt shared the film’s teaser/trailer announcement video on social media on Friday.
The 1.29-minute clip shows the journey of a boy of Mumbai streets as he goes on to become one of India’s most notable rappers bent on introducing Indians to ‘asli rap’—that which talks about the everyday struggle, grit and determination of the voiceless, the unseen.
Ranveer Singh’s youthfully restrained performance will remind you of his Bittu Sharma from his debut film Band Baaja Baaraat. However, from whatever is shown of Alia Bhatt and Kalki Koechlin, little is revealed apart from the predictable. They play Singh’s love interests who act as catalysts, propelling his growth and emergence in the Indian hip hop scene.
Known for making films on rich people’s existential problems, Zoya Akhtar seems to be challenging herself with Gully Boy, drawing inspiration from her brave directorial debut Luck By Chance, which was a spectacular insider’s view of all the madness and chaos that is Bollywood.
Produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar’s Excel Entertainment, Gully Boy is loosely based on the life of Indian rapper Divine, who is known for songs like Meri Gully and Roots. After its world premiere at the 69th Berlin International Film Festival, it will open in theatres on February 14. The trailer will be out on January 9.
