As we entered 2024, the spotlight was on India’s first aerial action movie Fighter, featuring Hrithik Roshan, Deepika Padukone and Anil Kapoor. Directed by Siddharth Anand, renowned for his earlier successes like War and Pathaan, the movie emerged as the year’s first big release. Released on January 25, during the Republic Day weekend, the film surpassed initial projections and as per recent reports, the movie has raked in an impressive Rs 3-3.15 Crore on its 12th day. Meanwhile, the film’s appeal has majorly leaned towards metropolitan city audiences. On the other hand, the film’s performance on weekdays could have been further boosted with a more aggressive pricing strategy. However, the decline in ticket prices during the weekdays became a pivotal factor in shaping Fighter’s box office trajectory.
According to reports, the movie has successfully crossed the Rs 170-crore mark in India. As it gears up to face competition from the Valentine’s Week release, Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya, featuring Shahid Kapoor and Kriti Sanon, the film still has a chance to cross Rs 200-crore net mark. While this total is respectable, it is slightly lower than the initial expectations for the film. Despite the low response, Fighter has claimed the title of the highest grossing Indian film in 2024 at the worldwide box office, as it is nearing the milestone of Rs 300 crore.
Despite facing competition in January, including successful Tollywood productions like HanuMan and Mahesh Babu’s Guntur Kaaram, Siddharth Anand’s film has outperformed them in terms of box office earnings. However, there was a hope that the film could have achieved even greater success considering the star power of Hrithik Roshan and Deepika Padukone.
Earlier speaking about the film’s box office collection, Siddharth in an interview with Galatta Plus, said, “Fighter is a huge leap. As filmmakers do this in the country and the kind of genre it is. It’s a space that is unexplored and is absolutely new. It has no reference point for the audience, that means what they are seeing is a little… accha… such big stars, a commercial director, acha ye planes kya kar rahi hain? I am like this is my film, I don’t know this. If you realize, there is a huge percentage of our country, I would say 90% who have not flown in planes. Who has not been to an airport. So how do you expect them to know what’s happening in the air?”
Apart from Hrithik Roshan, Deepika Padukone and Anil Kapoor, Fighter also features Karan Singh Grover, Akshay Oberoi, Rishabh Sawhney, Sanjeeda Sheikh, Ashutosh Rana, Talat Aziz and Sharib Hashmi.
