Bridgerton’s Nicola Coughlan Joins Doctor Who's Cast For Christmas Special Episode
Doctor Who recently released the first preview of its upcoming Christmas Special at the San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC).

Doctor Who has recently unveiled the first look of its upcoming Christmas Special at the San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC). And guess which actor is joining the cast as a new companion of the doctor this year? It is none other than our favourite Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan, who will team up with the Fifteenth Doctor Ncuti Gatwa. The preview of the special titled, Joy to the World, promises a festive adventure with Coughlan introducing her new character, Joy.

In a thrilling sneak peek presented at SDCC, Coughlan shared her enthusiasm for her role. “I am thrilled to be joining Doctor Who for the Christmas Special this year," she announced to the audience. “I am so excited for you to meet my character, Joy. A determined woman whose life is changed forever when she meets the doctor. I had the best, best time shooting this episode with Ncuti and the whole crew. I cannot wait for you to all meet Joy."

In the preview footage, we see the Doctor travelling through various points in the 20th century, desperately trying to deliver a ham-and-cheese toastie and a pumpkin latte. But he repeatedly stumbles into the wrong room.

Fast forward to the present year where Joy is seen checking in for a week-long stay at the Sandringham Hotel in London during Christmas time. As she settles into her room, her holiday plans take an unexpected turn when a Silurian (a reptilian humanoid) suddenly barges through a locked door in her room.

Armed with nothing but a hairdryer, Joy stands her ground against the unexpected intruder. Meanwhile, the Doctor arrives with the toastie and latte once again. He finally figures out the correct room to join Joy’s holiday adventure.

The announcement of Coughlan’s guest role in the 2024 Christmas Special of Doctor Who was made back in November 2023. Coughlan and Ncuti previously appeared together in a cameo for Margot Robbie’s Barbie movie.

Doctor Who, a beloved science fiction series that first aired on the BBC in 1963, was created by Sydney Newman, C. E. Webber and Donald Wilson. The show follows the adventures of an alien Time Lord known simply as the Doctor, who travels through time and space in a time machine called TARDIS that looks like a British police box.

After its original run from 1963 to 1989, Doctor Who was revived in 2005. It has inspired a wide range of spin-offs, including TV series, comic books, films and novels. Notable TV spin-offs include Torchwood, The Sarah Jane Adventure, K9, Classic, Tales of TARDIS and the upcoming The War Between the Land and the Sea.
