Indian film director and actor Bharathiraja, who has also worked as the president of the Tamil Film Active Producers Association (TFAPA), has agreed to the decision of the Tamil Nadu government to rename Kamdar Nagar Main Road in Chennai after late playback singer S. P. Balasubrahmanyam.
In a recent press conference, director and actor Bharathiraja said, “It is a fitting act that Kamdar town in Nungambakkam, Chennai, has been named after renowned playback singer S.P. Balasubrahmanyam. When friends part, we also pass on the memories surrounding them. But our grace lies in reliving past events. Thus, the musical voice that mingles with the wind and the waves among us is of S. P. Balasubrahmanyam. On behalf of the Tamil film industry, thanks to the Tamil Nadu Government and the Chief Minister for announcing the naming of Kamdar Nagar Main Road as SP Balasubrahmanyam Road.”
He added, “The Chief Minister’s interests and creative activities for the Tamil film industry are grateful. Tributes to the beloved S.P. Balasubrahmanyam who lives in our hearts.”
Meanwhile, a day after the Tamil Nadu government issued a press release announcing to renaming of a road in Chennai after the late legendary singer SP Balasubrahmanyam, his son and singer-producer SP Charan thanked the government.
In a post on his X handle, SP Charan wrote that as a family member of SPB and as representative of the fans of ‘Paadum Nila’, he is grateful to the Tamil Nadu government, Chief Minister MK Stalin, Sports Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin and other ministers for renaming Kamdar Nagar Main Road in Nungambakkam as SP Balasubrahmanyam Road; the singer’s residence is located on that road.
In his official statement, Chief Minister MK Stalin wrote that in honouring the late singer, who has sung over 40,000 songs in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi and Malayalam, the Kamdar Nagar Main Road has been renamed as SP Balasubrahmanyam Road on his death anniversary. Stalin, recalling SPB’s friendship with late DMK leader and former CM M Karunanidhi, said his father was so fond of the legendary singer.
For the unversed, SP Balasubrahmanyam has predominantly worked in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi films and sang in a total of 16 languages. He also bagged the esteemed Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan; SP Balasubrahmanyam breathed his last on September 25, 2020, due to health ailments.
