New Delhi: Irshad Kamil, the much acclaimed Hindi/Urdu poet and lyricist who has given soul to a lot of Bollywood songs with his meaningful words, believes that as a lyricist he has no pressure to give in to the demands and likes of the audience.
In an exclusive interaction with News18.com, Irshad Kamil answered the much-burning question about the poor quality of lyrics in the present times. He said that the audience needs to introspect why they like songs with vulgar meanings and ignore the soulful content-rich melodies. “The reason why this is happening is because we’re trying to become someone we’re not. People should ask themselves why they like songs with poor, vulgar lyrics. Jo bikta hai, wahi likhta hai. If the audience improves their choice, the song-writing will automatically improve.”
“Aap apni jado se katke aasman nahi choo sakte”, said the lyricist while addressing various people from different walks of life gathered at Indian Habitat Centre in the capital while stressing on the need to stay connected to your roots and culture.
When asked about the pressure he has to face to meet the likes and demands of the listeners while writing the songs, he smiled and said, “As a lyricist, I’ve no pressure. I’m just like any other performer. If I’m acting as a gunda it doesn’t make me a gunda. If I’m writing something which is not up to the mark according to the audience, doesn’t mean I’m writing something bad.”
He also stressed on the fact that one needs to raise the standards of their choice if they want relevant lyrics in Bollywood films. “Songs that alleviate your character are going to stay with you forever. If you only want violent and indecent thoughts, then that’s not really an art.”
Many senior artists including Javed Akhtar believe that Irshad Kamil is one of the finest lyricists we’ve ever had. ‘Tamasha’, ‘Love Aaj Kal’, ‘Jab We Met’, ‘Chameli’, ‘Rockstar’, ‘Aashiqui 2’ and ‘Raanjhnaa’ are only some of the films he has written award-winning songs for.
