Amidst the controversies brewing around him, Amitabh Bachchan decided to sit down with Simi Garewal for an open and candid chat that covered his alleged relationship rumours with Rekha and marriage with Jaya Bachchan.
In an interview with Rediff, Simi Garewal once reflected on how important it was that Amitabh Bachchan to agree to the interview during a tough time. She noted that even though he was vulnerable, he stayed composed and dignified. Simi felt that the interview was about making him feel safe to share, and she admired how he handled the tough questions with grace. “We talked of everything under the sun. His childhood, adolescence, parents, ABCL, his flops, his return, his family, Jaya, the kids, the kind of women he likes, his professional decisions,” she said.
Simi Garewal also said that even though people thought he wasn’t his honest self in the interview, she thinks otherwise. She said, “I think he was completely honest. There are people who, after that interview, said, ‘Amitabh Bachchan is not like that!’ Or ‘He was not telling the truth about Rekha!'”
Simi had shot for a solo bit with Amitabh Bachchan and one with Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan. She said, “Once Jaya came on to the sets, he was more comfortable, he was completely himself. Then the wisecracks began and the witty side of his personality began to emerge.”
During the interview, Amitabh Bachchan was asked about his linkup rumours and alleged relationship with Rekha. Denying the affair with Rekha, Amitabh Bachchan said, “She has been my co-star and colleague. And when we were working together, obviously we met each other. Socially, we have nothing in common. That’s about it. Sometimes we bump into each other at a function, which is, you know, an award function, for example, or at a social gathering. But that’s about it.”
This interview stands out not only for Amitabh’s openness but also for Simi’s ability to bring out the human side of the superstar, something that made it one of the most viewed and cherished episodes of her show.
Interestingly, Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan and Rekha had starred in the blockbuster musical romantic movie, Silsila, in 1981.
