In 2004, World Blood Donor Day was incubated by the World Health Organization (WHO). In the 58th World Health Anniversary, it was declared an annual global event.

World Blood Donor Day is observed worldwide on June 14 as an occasion to honour and thank the people who donate their blood on a voluntary, unpaid basis to give the most precious gift of all the gift of life. This day provides an opportunity to create public awareness and build a culture of voluntary blood donation.

World Blood Donor Day is also celebrated to create wider awareness throughout the world about the need for availability, and for more people to commit to regular voluntary blood donation for saving lives.

The theme for 2024 is 20 years of celebrating giving: thank you, blood donors! This is the 20th Anniversary of this day and it is an excellent opportunity to thank donors of blood worldwide for their life-saving donations and honour the profound impact on both doctors and patients. It is also the right opportunity to address the challenges we continue to face with safe blood transfusion accessibility worldwide and accelerate the progress of the same.

In 2004, the World Blood Donor Day was incubated by the World Health Organization (WHO). In the 58th World Health Anniversary, it was declared as an annual global event to highlight the importance of blood donation worldwide.

This day was also chosen as World Blood Donor Day as it is the birth anniversary of Karl Landsteiner, an Austrian American biologist, physician, pathologist and immunologist, who was awarded a Nobel Prize in 1930, for his work on the modern blood transfusion system and blood group.

The significance of World Blood Donor Day lies in the fact that on this day, volunteers, male and female, from various countries of the world, donate their blood and plasma selflessly and without any monetary incentive to help save the lives of people in need.
