Cleansing is one of the most crucial steps when it comes to skincare. It helps you get rid of dirt, impurities, and bacteria from the skin. However, doing it the wrong way can lead to severe skin issues like acne, dryness and breakouts along with causing permanent damage to one’s skin.
Dr Kiran Sethi, a skincare expert, shared some mistakes one should avoid doing while cleansing their skin:
Never wash your face without hot water: She recommended people wash their face with lukewarm water as cleansing with water that’s too hot can cause “unwanted dryness”.
Harsh scrubbing means a deeper clean: Exfoliating is a crucial step, but one should not scrub their face too aggressively. “Harsh scrubbing may cause irritation and dryness. When it comes to skincare, gentle should be your motto,” she said.
She suggested people always moisturise their skin after the cleansing procedure regardless of their skin type. “Everyone should moisturise after cleansing- oily skin types included. Even if your cleanser is formulated with hydrating ingredients like ceramides and hyaluronic acid, it’s important to hydrate your skin post-cleanse with facial creams, lotions, serums and more,” she mentioned.
Dr Kiran also talked about the importance of a good cleanser in her video. She said cleansers are building blocks of your skincare routine, and hence a good cleanser will balance your skin, reduce the need for more skincare products and will add to the routine that’s designed to give you better results.
The dermatologist talked about the importance of choosing the correct cleanser according to skin type. She recommended salicylic acid for oily skin and cream-based cleanser for dry skin types.
“If you are dry and use a face wash that is too foaming, you risk balancing and getting even drier. If you are too oily and you are too gentle in cleansing, to miss out on an important step that can truly help you cut through the grease. Your cleanser is genuinely an important choice in your skincare routine. Don’t ignore it!” she wrote.
