CHENNAI: The Indian Red Cross Society, Tamil Nadu, celebrated World Red Cross Day here in the city in memory of Sir Jean Henry Dunant, founder of the movement. Twenty nursing students who had completed their course were capped in a ceremony held to mark the occasion. D Jayakumar, Speaker, Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, administered the oath to the students.Delivering the presidential address Dr A Muruganathan, vice president of the Indian Red Cross Society, said, “This year the theme of the celebration is ‘Youth on the Move’. This theme encourages personality development and capacity building among youngsters. Hence it is our responsibility not only to enlighten, educate and empower the youth to be the epitome of peace and innovation, but also to harness their energy constructively for bringing about a change among themselves and in society.”Dr Muruganathan added that the Youth Red Cross had decided to plant 10 lakh saplings with the help of 32 universities all over Tamil Nadu. Speaker Jayakumar launched the sapling project with assistance from 10 lakh Red Cross volunteers.“The Youth Red Cross has rendered service to people all over the world without discrimination.Youngsters who are a part of this service should always stick to the work, analyse it and achieve their goals,” said Jayakumar.Twenty six universities were given awards under various categories for their services in Youth Red Cross.
