The Unorganised Workers Federation has urged Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa to set up a grievance redressel cell to settle the thousands of claim petitions.
Ending their State-wide chain of demonstrations here on Monday, Geetha Ramakrishnan, social activist and advisor to the Unorganised Workers Federation, pointed out that in 2008, Jayalalithaa had issued a statement in support of the unorganised workers and condemning the stand taken by the then DMK government in involving the Revenue Department in the registration and disbursement of claims.
“In 2008, Jayalalithaa, in a strongly-worded statement, called the move ‘anti-worker’ and condemned the involving of the Revenue Department. We request her to look into it and withdraw the respective GOs and make a pro-people move,” Geetha said.
She also stressed the need to involve trade unions in the functioning of all the 17 unorganised sector welfare boards and justified their involvement.
“Most of the offices work only till 1 pm. To run from pillar to post in the government office, the workers are losing their daily wages. We urge the government to involve the trade unions to do the job of registration and also do the paper work for the claims,” she reasoned.
Around 40 crore workers are employed in the unorganised sector in the country, with two crore from Tamil Nadu alone.
The sector covers a range of occupations from construction, agriculture, handlooms, fish, salt, domestic, street vending, forest, sanitary, dhobi, service occupations, home-based work, etc.
Most of the unorganised workers in various occupations especially the migrant workers have no identity and are invisible on records as there are no work records and as such registration of workers has to be done on a war-footing, the federation demanded. On During Monday, over 400 unorganised sector workers and various independent union representatives participated.
