KOCHI: In an exemplary gesture of love and compassion, two women donated kidneys to each other’s husbands. Abdul Majeed of Thanur and Balakrishnan of Perunthaloor, Malappuram, were saved when Majeed’s wife Thahira donated her kidney to Balakrishnan and his wife Bindu donated her kidney to Majeed. The crossover kidney transplant was necessitated since the spouses had different blood groups. Majeed’s B+ve blood group did not match with wife Thahira’s A+ve group. Balakrishnan, who is A+ve, had the same issue with Bindu, whose blood group is B+ve. Both men were brought together to the transplantation counselling department of the PVS Memorial Hospital, Kaloor, and the wives came forward to donate their kidneys to each other’s husbands. The hospital made arrangements to conduct four surgeries, including two transplants, within one week. The surgeries conducted under the guidance of Dr George P Abraham and Dr Georgy K Nainan were successful.
