BANGALORE: As part of its service motto, Lions Clubs International has taken an oath of ‘afforestation.’ The International Association of Lions Clubs had taken an initiative called Lions Green Revolution.The aim of this initiative is to plant trees and establish forests.The awareness programme assumed importance as Lions Club International has planted more than four million saplings in various locations across South India as part of Lions Green Revolution programme.Dr Wing-Kun Tam, international president, Lions Clubs International said, “We want to make green revolution campaign a people’s movement, for it to have the maximum desired effect.And thus I feel planting saplings could be the ideal point to get mass support.We are happy that our Lions Club members have taken the lead in making it a mass movement and are confident that like minded people would join hands to make the campaign a grand success.” “Global warming has the potency to trigger a greater catastrophe in the years to come as it would damage our environment.In this context, widespread awareness of the harmful effects of global warming on a sustainable basis is the need of the hour,” he added.Commenting on the green revolution initiatives, V V Krishna Reddy, international director, Lions Club International, said, “As part of our organisation’s vision, we are keen to spread green revolution message and also educate masses on afforestation to help benefit the future generation and inform them about the effects of global warming and greenhouse effect”.Speaking on the occasion, Vijaykumar Shetty, Lions Club 324D1 district governor said, “Lions Club International has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with United Nations to partner and work towards Millennium Goals.Global warming is one of the most important goals amongst the Millennium Goals.” “Hence, our international president Dr Tam has given a call to all our Lions Club International members to solve this problem by planting saplings across the world to create a green cover and make our lives lookreally beautiful,” added Vijaykumar Shetty Also present on the occasion were S Ramachandran, district governor, 324D6, Dr S Nagaraja Rao, Dr PRS Chetan and Satyaprakash among others.
