Winds of change: Malayalam film industry comes up with movies which deal with homosexuality
With Mollywood trying its hand on offbeat themes, we can certainly say that the Malayalam cinema is coming of age.

New Delhi: So far it was an untouched subject down south, but with the Supreme Court ruling that makes gay sex a punishable offence, has provoked the sagacious directors of Mollywood to come up with stories that depict the emotional aspect of homosexuality. There are many filmmakers who are using this sensitive subject in their movies and some of the movies even based on it.

'My Life Partner' and 'Odum Raja Aadum Rani' are the two upcoming movies that have gay relationship as the central theme.

In an interview given to Deccan Chronicle, M.B Padmakumar- the director of My Life Partner talks about his movie and says, "New filmmakers need to veer away from the traditional subjects and one cannot close one's eyes to the feelings, emotions and presence of the gay community. Homosexuality is a human behaviour like drinking or prostitution and has to be addressed and not swept under the carpet! It is only in Kerala that people prefer to wear masks but other metros like Mumbai and Chennai are more tolerant to such themes."

Padmakumar shared another major concern and revealed that there are no buyers for such movies and there's always a sense of reluctance among the distributors on such subjects.

Another movie that takes up this subject is 'Odum Raja Aadum Rani', directed by Viju Varma. This is the story of Tini Tom, who is a travelling door-to-door salesman and an effeminate karagattakara dancer played who falls for him.

With Mollywood trying its hand on offbeat themes, we can certainly say that the Malayalam cinema is coming of age.
