A march will be held from EWS quarters to CMs house in order to highlight BBMPs negligence

Despite the interim orders passed by the Karnataka High Court, people residing in EWS quarters in Ejipura are up in arms, and will be organising a protest march fearing that the land on which they have indivisible rights will be given away to a private company.

The march will be held from EWS quarters in Ejipura to the Chief Minister’s house. However, the date has not been finalised yet.

Prabhakar, a member of the Dalit and Minorites Land Protection Organisation says, “As of now. an interim order has been passed by the court. But our protest will stress mainly on one factor and that is rehabilitation of people residing in EWS quarters by the government and not by any private company.”

In January, an MoU was signed between the BBMP and Maverick Holdings and Investments Private Limited to construct a new housing complex for them under land sharing scheme.

According to the agreement, Maverick would construct 1,512 houses at an estimated cost of `300 crore. Following the criticism from the High Court of Karnataka regarding the pathetic condition of EWS quarters, the BBMP had assured the court that BBMP would provide all the facilities, including 24-hour lift to the nine-storey building proposed on the land.

Further more, the BBMP had passed a resolution stating that the residents will be relocated to Iggalur and houses will be constructed.

The proposal did not get a positive response from the residents as most of the people work in the vicinity and the shift, they feel will be detrimental to their interest. However, the detailed project report (DPR) has not been prepared yet.

In 1996, 1,512 persons were allotted  flats. Proportional share over the land was also given to them. Unfortunately, the occupants had to be evacuated about eight years ago after a series of building collapses.

The BBMP and the state government had formulated a scheme for  construction of flats for people belonging to EWS in 1985, and the construction began only in 1987.
