Kolkata: Seventy-six per cent polling was recorded in the fourth phase of the Assembly elections in West Bengal.

Bardhaman, Birbhum and Murshidabad are the three districts that went to polls on Wednesday. Chief Electoral Officer Debasis Sen claimed that polling in the three constituencies was peaceful and no untoward incident had been reported.

Sources in the election office said Birbhum and Burdwan recorded more than 82 and 78 per cent turnout and Murshidabad accounted for around 75 per cent.

The Election Commission had pressed in paramilitary forces at the polling booths and extra vigil had been maintained along West Bengal's border with Jharkhand and Bangladesh to prevent the entry of undesirable voters.

Even though polling was officially over at 1700 hrs (IST), a large number of people waited in long queues in front of many booths even after the deadline to cast their votes.

More than 280 candidates are trying their luck in 57 constituencies in these Assembly polls.
