BANGALORE: It looks all is not well between the chiefs of Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and Bangalore University (BU).It all started when the VC wrote an open letter to the students as well as BBMP commissioner when the university organised Civic Sense Day on September 22. Later, on September 28, at Academic Council meeting, Dr Prabhu Dev said they were waiting for the civic agency to undertake road repair work at their campus. He also said that now the university officers would take up the responsibility for a smooth drive inside Jnana Bharathi campus. This act might be a wake up call to the Palike to undertake road repair work at the earliest, he had said during the meeting. On September 29, in the BBMP Council meeting, Commissioner Siddaiah raised the issue and said VC should take his words back. Siddaiah took serious objections to the VC’s remarks that the university would teach civic sense lessons to the BBMP. Though it was the duty of the university to maintain the road, the BBMP had spent money to fill potholes and redo the road, he claimed. The VC has issued another open letter to the BBMP commissioner in which he stated that no where he said that they would teach civic sense lessons to BBMP. He said it had been misinterpreted. However, taking objection to Siddaiah’s remark that BU roads did not belong to BBMP, the VC said that if the roads did not belong to BBMP,should BU not allow public to use their roads. He also asked Siddaiah whether the university can restrict public vehicles. It can be recalled here that minister R Ashok had laid the foundation stone for an ambitious road-widening project in the area. The BBMP had set a nine-month deadline for the project estimated to cost Rs. 12 crore. The work would cover the roads connecting from administrative office to Nagarbhavi, convert the main campus road to four lanes and bicycle track for university students. However, so far nothing has been done. The BBMP officials blame it on monsoon for not starting the work.
