MALAPPURAM: “Certain lobbies with vested interests are trying to blow up a petty student clash on the campus as an issue of regionalism,” said Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) Malappuram campus director PP Mohammed on Sunday. He told ‘Express’ that the university authorities had set up a commission to inquire into the incident and one student was suspended from the hostel pending enquiry. As per sources, a scuffle broke out among students about the distribution of ‘samosas’ in the mess hall on last Wednesday. The student-in-charge of the food distribution opposed giving seven ‘samosas’ to a student instead of the two per-member quota.Though the issue was solved at the mess itself, a group of students attacked Mohammed Rafi, who was in-charge of the food distribution and his friend when they came out of the mess hall. Rafi suffered serious head injuries and was admitted to the Perinthalmanna taluk hospital. The commission set up by the authorities has suspended Younish Kumar, a student from Uttar Pradesh, for alleged attack on Rafi with a wooden rod. But the twist came when a part of the North Indian media tried to paint the incident as a case of regionalism claiming that North Indian students were attacked on the campus. However, the centre authorities have dismissed regional bias as reason behind the clash though a majority of the hostel inmates are from North India.
