Uttarakhand floods: Massive confusion over missing children
ICDS Secretary Radha Ratudi says the agency has a figure of missing children, but she is not sure if it is correct.

Dehradun: Eighteen days have passed since heavy rains, flash floods and landslides wreaked havoc in Uttarakhand but the state government machinery has failed to finalise the number of missing children in the state. The government made a panel to get the details of missing children in the tragedy. But the panel itself is confused on the data even as the opposition has been targeting Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna for the arrangements in the devastated areas of the state.

Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) Secretary Radha Ratudi says the agency has a figure of missing children, but she is not sure if it is correct. A meeting was also held between National Child Protection Commission and state administration's top executives on Wednesday in Dehradun to discuss measures to find the missing children.

The government has also established a centre for the missing children. According to the government statistics 1,227 children are still missing after the tragedy. Many local children are also included in the list along with those who came from other states as tourists or pilgrims.

Even though the ICDS sent out a press release about the number of missing children but even Radha Ratudi was not confident about the figure. She said that the list had only 824 children as missing while 1,227 children are missing.

"We have received many SMSes and messages from all over the country about missing children and we are checking these figures" said Radha.

There is no clarity on missing adults too. Different government officials have giving different figures and the confusion shows that the disaster management committee is clueless on how to tackle the calamity.

Even the opposition has targeted Bahuguna and alleged that the government has no idea about the exact loss due to the tragedy.

What's your reaction?
