New Delhi: In Copenhagen, a war of words broke out at the climate talks between the world's two largest carbon polluters - US and China. The disagreement was over who is more sincere about its pledges to control emissions.
Obama's chief negotiator and US Special Envoy For Climate, Todd Stern, urged China to stick to its promise of slowing down its carbon output.
"The country whose emissions are going up dramatically, really dramatically, is China and that's the reason that we can't have an agreement that doesn't have a real commitment by China. I mean right now China is the biggest emitter in the world," Stern said.
However, Chinese officials said they will swing into action only after the US meets its 17-year-old commitment to provide financial aid to developing countries to adapt to climate change policies.
Special Representative for Climate Change Negotiations for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Yu Qingtai said, "In this regard, what they (the Americans) need to do is some deep soul-searching."
