The Director of a prominent Delhi-based NGO, who faced the charge of rape levelled by a rights activist, allegedly committed suicide by jumping from the third floor of his posh Vasant Kunj house in South Delhi on Wednesday morning, police said. Anwar was a native of Allahabad and an alumni of JNU. Anwar is survived by his wife and a son who too lives in Delhi.
The incident took place a day after the allegation of rape surfaced against Khurshid Anwar who was the Director of Institute for Social Democracy NGO.
"Anwar jumped from the balcony of his flat situated on the third floor at around 11 am. Locals rushed him to nearby Fortis Hospital from where he was referred to the AIIMS Trauma Centre where he was declared brought dead by the doctors," said a police official.
He lived alone in his house as his wife, who is a professor of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), lives in the accommodation provided by the university.
Although police have not recovered any suicide note from his house, it seems he took the extreme step as he was upset over the allegations of rape leveled against him by a 24-year-old woman who registered a case of rape and drugging against him at Vasant Kunj (North) police station last evening.
The girl was a rights activist herself and had actively taken part in the post December 16 gang-rape protests at India Gate last year. Police said his body has been handed over to the family after the postmortem.
