BANGALORE: The Union government plans to convene a meeting of all major political parties and develop a broad consensus in bringing out electoral reforms in the nation, Union Law Minister Salman Khurshid said. Speaking at a seminar titled ‘Electoral reforms in India and the Intellectuals’ organised by the All India Conference of Intellectuals here on Friday, he touched upon the phenomena of criminal antecedents of politicians and “paid news”.  I favour a broad consensus among all political parties on any matter relating to electoral reforms, the minister said. Stating that the UPA government was concerned about the increasing trend of criminals entering the political stream, he added that the Central government was serious about the issue, and was trying to prevent it. He added that long-lasting solution that is needed. Favouring the introduction of state-of-the-art ballot system, the Union minister opined that the deployment of internet facilities for facilitating voting may not only improve the polling percentage but also accuracy. “The application of all banking and business operations through internet is widespread; what is wrong if the same is extended to the electoral system?” the Union minister asked.
