Lucknow: Hailing the victory of Indian cricket team in one-day tri-series against Australia, the Uttar Pradesh government on Wednesday announced to confer upon the pretigious Kanshiram Sports Award on Praveen Kumar, the Team India member from the state who was instrumental in his team's victory.
Praveen, hailing from Meerut, was named 'man of the match' in the final match played at Brisbrane yesterday when he took vital four wickets to see his team romping home. An announcement to this effect was made by Chief Minister Mayawati in her suo moto statement in the state assmebly here. She complimented the pacer for his commendable performance and said he had done the state proud.
The award with a cash prize of Rs ten lakh would be given to him on March 15, the birth anniversary of Bahujan Samaj Party ideologue Kanshiram In the past, the Kanshiram Khelratna award had been given to Rudra Pratap Singh and Piyush Chawla, the former had to skip Australia tour due to injury while the latter was member of Indian winning squad.
Later, talking to newspersons, Ms Mayawati announced cash award of Rs five lakh each to UP lads Tanmay Srivastava and Iqbal Abdullah, the members of Indian Under-19 cricket team which won the junior world cup in Kulalumpur on March 3. Tanmay plays for Uttar Pardesh while Abdullah, though hailing from the state, plays for Mumbai.
