BHUBANESWAR: Underground power supply system is coming up at Konark. Chief Secretary Bijay Kumar Patnaik on Tuesday reviewed the progress of underground cable-laying work at a high-level meeting here. He directed CESU authorities to complete the work by June-end next year. According to the meeting, the overhead lines of 1.5 km length along the main road connecting Sun Temple and the adjacent town will be converted to double unlined underground cable so that in case of failure of one cable line power supply is not disturbed. The second underground cable line will sustain the power supply. The cables will have the capacity to cart up to six MV. The existing transformers will also be substituted by compact sub-stations giving the tourist place more decent look and making it safe for the tourists. Presently, there are 26 transformers catering to the need of Konark temple city and adjacent rural area. Out of this, nine transformers of 1,125 KV are being used for city area alone. The new system will have four compact substations and two spun-pole structured substations with a total capacity of 2,200 KV. There will be a looping arrangement between the transformers so that in case of failure of power supply from one transformer it can be restored from the other. The cost of the project has been estimated at ` 2.31 crore. A new substation with 132/33 KV will be constructed near the existing one to ensure power supply to fringe areas of the temple city. The substation will be constructed by Gridco. The Chief Secretary directed the CESU authorities to expedite the tendering process and initiate the process to procure materials so that cabling and installation of compact sub-stations can be completed by scheduled time.
