New Delhi: Pakistani army claims to have killed 100 Taliban militants including the son of pro-Taliban cleric Sufi Mohammad, Maulana Kifayatullah, in Lower Dir.
Kifayatullah, whose father brokered the controversial Swat peace deal with the Pakistani government, was reportedly killed during shelling by the army.
Helicopter gunship reportedly pounded militant hideouts in Kabal and Mingora and security forces have taken over the town of Zamarudkan.
Meanwhile In Washington, Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari has been reportedly promised $20 billion in military and economic aid.
But Zardari has been set tough new benchmarks to ensure the money is not diverted elsewhere or misappropriated.
Zardari was advised by US President Barack Obama to move his army away from the border with India to reinforce the fight against the Taliban.
The US has also pushed Zardari and Afghan President Hamid Karzai to sign a MoU on transit trade that could ultimately benefit India.
The two countries are to complete talks this year on the modalities of trade from the Wagah border transiting Pakistan and into Afghanistan through the Khyber Pass. Pakistan until now has refused to allow such trade to happen.
