BBMP Council had decided to ensure that vacant sites are free from weeds and garbage at Settihalli...

BANGALORE: Settihalli, being one of the newly added wards, needs immediate attention of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagar Palike (BBMP) as far as  amenities are concerned. Areas such as Abbigere, Myadarahalli, Chikkasandra, Nisarga Layout, Someshwara Layout, Kammagondanahalli Muniswamy Layout, and Jalahalli West are the localities of Settihalli Ward. The BBMP Council had decided to ensure that vacant sites are free from weeds and garbage. The civic body had taken a decision to clear the weeds from the vacant sites and collect the wages for clearing the weeds from the respective site owners. If the overgrown weeds on a number of vacant sites is anything to go by, it seems that Settihalli Ward is exempted from the norm of imposing penalty on owners of vacant sites or the owners have no clue about the existence of  such a norm.“The weeds on vacant sites are posing danger  to us as they have become home for snakes and there are occasions where snakes sneak into our houses. “I have already complained to   Mayor Sharadamma about this nuisance. I hope Sharadamma takes up measures to ensure clearing of weeds on these vacant sites,’’ said Manjunath NH, general secretary, Vijayalakshmi Layout Residents’ Welfare Association. Not only the vacant sites but also the open drains are full of weeds at 2nd cross of Visvesvaraiah Enclave.Whenever the pourkarmikas fail to turn up for collecting the garbage at the door steps, the residents have no option other than dumping the garbage on vacant sites. “There are no problems except weeds and garbage dumped on the vacant sites in our locality. I even spent money to clean the sites that are full of weeds,’’ said C R Mohan, a resident of Visvesvaraiah Enclave.Though many roads were asphalted, something has to be done to remove the garbage from the open drains at various areas in Settihalli Ward. Sharadamma, Mayor, has assured to take up cleaning work on a massive scale. “I have already instructed the area engineers to take up cleaning work immediately. We want to impose penalty on the vacant site owners for not keeping the sites clean. We failed  to take action due to lack of information about those owners,’’ said Sharadamma.  The BBMP had sanctioned Rs 3 crore for the development works in Settihalli Ward last year. “I have allotted Rs 1 crore (Rs 50 lakh each) to construct two school buildings at Chikkasandra and Settihalli. BBMP had dug more than 10 borewells and one of them failed to yield water. Various  areas were provided with street lights last year,’’ narrates Sharadamma.
