Kathmandu: The UK on Thursday pledged full support to Nepal's peace process and offered an aid of 20 million pounds to conclude the reconciliation efforts in the country.
In a meeting held in Kathmandu with Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai, UK's Secretary of State for International Development, Andrew Mitchell pledged assistance of 20 million pounds (NRs 2.5 billion) and also extended his country's full support for the ongoing peace process.
Mitchell discussed the critical outstanding issues on the peace process, including the discharge of the former Maoist combatants and ensuring progress towards a new constitution and elections.
Prime Minister's private secretary Bishwo Deep Pandey quoted Bhattarai as saying that he was fully committed to completing the peace process.
Mitchell arrived in Kathmandu on Tuesday on a three-day official visit to Nepal, mainly to see how British assistances are being executed and to meet senior government officials.
Besides Bhattarai, Mitchell also called on President Ram Baran Yadav and other senior political leaders of Nepal. "Between now and 2015 the UK Government will ensure that 230,000 direct jobs are created through private sector development, 4232 km of roads are built or upgraded and 110,000 people benefit from improved sanitation", a British Embassy press release said.
Mitchell also visited Lamjung and Gorkha districts of western Nepal to inspect the British aided projects. "In addition, the UK will help 4 million Nepalis to strengthen their ability to cope with natural disasters and the adverse impact of climate change," it added.
