In a village within the Udupi district, Karnataka, the locals were demanding a road. Despite numerous visits to the village panchayat, they got no response. Amid all this, the determination of one man has shocked everyone. He built a dirt road all by himself. This road is located at Mala Peradka, near Bajagoli in the Karkala Taluk of Udupi District. The man named Govinda Gowda lives in Girijana Colony. Everyone calls him Govinda Govindanna. He managed to build the road by spending almost two years. The question is how Govindanna accomplished this feat single-handedly. He constructed an impressive dirt road using just a spade and a pickaxe. The road might resemble something constructed with heavy machinery like a JCB. Yet, it was built by one person using simple tools.
Govindanna, a diligent worker, has always lived in harmony with nature, engaging primarily in farming. He dreamt of having a road outside his home and repeatedly approached the local panchayat to turn his dream into reality. Despite being illiterate and often disregarded by local officials, Govindanna never gave up. Over two years, he devoted himself to building the road. Now, everyone in the village talks about him proudly.
Similarly, a man in the eastern Indian state of Orissa has built an 8 km road using only a pickaxe and a crowbar, so that school children can visit home more often. Jalandhar Nayak, 45, lives in a remote village 10 km from the boarding school where his three sons go to school. It takes three hours to get there because the boys have to cross five hills to visit their homes.
Local officials told the BBC they were building the remaining 7 km of the road. For the past two years, he has set out every morning with his tools and spent up to eight hours a day cutting rocks and removing rubble. He told reporters at the scene that he hoped his sons would be able to get home more often on weekends or during holidays once the road was completed. The 15 km road will connect Mr Nayak’s village with the town where the school is located.
